New-build luxury villa around existing ruin in northern Portugal.
The client for this project had acquired a hillside plot to the north of Porto with fantastic views towards the ocean and surrounded by extensive tree planting. A historic ruined villa stood at the center of the site forming a connection with similar properties in the local village.
Stringent planning rules restricted the built form visible from the access road, leading to a strategy of using the topography to conceal the majority of new construction. All that is visible from the street is the existing ruin and small double garage, with the steep slope hiding the new house.
The internal spaces are gradually revealed as one circulates down the building, implementing the existing ruin as the circulation mediating device. Bedrooms and large internal spaces are buried below green roofs. Living, kitchen and dining spaces spread onto terraces facing the ocean, with a pool, spa and gym occupying the semi underground lower floor.
The spa and main pool extend from dimly lit interiors into an external infinity pool reaching towards the long range view.
