New Clubhouse and changing facilities
Mailen Design was shortlisted in an open competition to design a new Clubhouse for the Old Freemen’s Association as part of the City of London, Old Freemen’s School, Surrey.
Nestled on an archaeological site within the woodland’s adjacent to the playing fields, the project had to respond carefully to the context whilst also providing facilities for entertainment, events and supporting spaces for a range of sports such as cricket, rugby and hockey.
The proposal used a glulam diagrid roof structural and modular wall system to provide a cost-effective yet dramatic space for communal gatherings. A separate entrance for players linked to the changing room via a high-level balcony to clap the teams back in and for rallying post-game calls. A simple modern form with timber cladding and a shingle roof made sure the building maintained a status without dominating the natural surroundings.
