Cycle Hub, Exhibition Spaces and Accommodation
Mailen Design were successful in winning a national open competition to renovate Kielder Castle, an 18th Century hunting lodge in the heart of Kielder Forest, Northumberland.
Our proposal centres around the creation of a new destination for cyclists of all abilities and ages to provide a social focal point, support and exhibition spaces and accommodation within the existing castle. The first phase acts as a catalyst to future refurbishment we would propose a series of spaces defined by the existing plan for education, inspiration and recuperation. This would be linked by a common aesthetic where the timber bike run inspires a flowing architectural installation reflecting the bike trail as ‘king’. The proposal creates an environment where nature, sport, innovation and community combine.
