Family house in West Sussex.
At Jachin Barn we converted an oak frame barn into a generous new five bedroom house. The client’s priorities were to create a home that made the most of the fantastic site, was a warm retreat for their family and an open, inviting place for guests to visit. The interior was to marry the best qualities of a contemporary open-plan house and the cosiness of a traditional Sussex cottage.
These aspirations were achieved through opening up the building to the surrounding countryside and the careful design of spaces that combine to feel unified as a comfortable family house while varying in scale from intimate bedrooms in the roof to a triple-height living space with new mezzanine. The original barn’s fabric and the new construction are dovetailed throughout, with craftsmanship and the quality of natural materials celebrated.
The clients had the foresight to build the basic barn structure several years previously, in the knowledge that planning restrictions would make them wait some time before it could be used as a dwelling. As a conversion of a barn that was always intended to be a house, Jachin Barn achieves the best of both worlds: the character of a barn conversion and the good-fit of a bespoke contemporary home.
