Client: The Museum of New Art, Estonia
Status: Competition October 2013
Our competition entry for a new gallery in Parnu, Estonia aimed to take full advantage of the riverbank location by dispersing elements of the programme across the extent of the site. Art displays and amenities are interlaced throughout an arrangement of landscaping, buildings, floating pavilions and covered pathways to form layered seasonal parklands.
Traditional gallery arrangements are teased open and offered up to the site. A series of interconnecting structures act as an extended threshold, encouraging visitors to meander through the public park and experience the riverside setting in new ways.
The parkland hosts exhibitions that transform with the changing seasons, proposing a rich and varied landscape of permanent and temporary sculptures. Artworks set amongst the long grasses of summer are experienced from the vantage point of an elevated path, while in winter visitors travel beneath the same walkway, sheltered by a glazed colonnade.
